From production units to a weekly rate

Piecework pays for completed units rather than directly paying an hourly wage. The number printed beside a piece is therefore not an hourly rate. A piece rate overtime calculator first multiplies each quantity by its pay-per-piece amount, totals those earnings, and then uses the worker's actual hours to derive an average hourly regular rate for the workweek.

Actual time remains essential even when production records are detailed. Two people can complete the same number of units in different numbers of hours, producing different weekly average rates and different overtime-hour results. This calculator does not infer production time from output and does not treat piece count as a timesheet.

Piece rows and other earnings

Create a separate row for every product, task, or piece price used during the week. Whole-unit mode flags fractional quantities. The fractional-units option is available for systems that genuinely pay partial units; it is not permission to estimate an unknown quantity. Negative quantities and negative piece prices are rejected.

Bonus, commission, differential, or other earnings can be labeled Included, Excluded, or Unsure. Unsure other pay stays outside the primary result and produces a clear warning. The choice records an assumption without claiming that a payment meets a statutory exclusion.

Piecework overtime formula

At a 1.5 multiplier, the additional factor is 0.5 because the piecework earnings are modeled as straight-time compensation for all hours. The result does not multiply the piece price by 1.5. It derives a weekly hourly average first.

The effective earnings-per-piece result is a production summary: piece earnings divided by total pieces. It is not the regular rate and is not used as the overtime rate.

Two piece types in a 44-hour week

The tested example uses 100 assembly pieces at $3.00 and 20 finishing pieces at $5.00. Piecework earnings are $400.00. A $40 included quality bonus produces $440.00 in modeled compensation.

Across 44 actual hours, the estimated regular rate is $10.00 before display rounding. Four overtime hours produce an additional premium of $20.00, and the estimated total is $460.00.

Verified production trace: 100 x $3 + 20 x $5 = $400; add $40; divide by 44 hours; apply the half-time factor to 4 hours.

Common errors and boundaries

A frequent mistake is multiplying the piece price itself by an overtime multiplier. Another is dividing a two-week production payment by combined hours without allocating it to the workweeks where it was earned. Missing setup time, cleanup time, waiting time, or other compensable time can also distort the denominator, but this tool cannot decide which activities count as hours worked.

A zero-hour entry prevents the rate calculation. A zero-piece week remains visible rather than inventing earnings. Minimum wage, coverage, exemption, state rules, and the sufficiency of production records require separate review.
